PGY1 Teaching Skills Workshops Update
It is mandatory for PG1 residents to attend two teaching skills workshops in addition to the one presented last June at New Resident Orientation. The interactive workshops are 1.5 hours long and are held in the Department of Medical Education, Room 988 CME, 808 South Wood Street.
The 2004-2005 GME resident teaching skills program kicked off on Tuesday, December 14, with a workshop on "Case-Based Learning.” In this session residents learned to:
Describe the potential benefits of Case-Based Learning (CBL),
Compare and contrast different types of CBL,
Analyze both effective and ineffective implementations of CBL, and
Select techniques to promote effective CBL.
"Case-Based Learning”  was followed on Tuesday, January 25, by “Teaching Procedural Skills” in which residents learned to:
Use a four-step process to effectively teach procedural skills,
Modify the process according to circumstances, and
Create an environment in which it is safe for others to learn.
Remaining workshops include:

UIC Child Abuse or Neglect Reporting Procedure
Updated February 2005
1.
Gather appropriate information to substantiate suspected abuse or neglect.
2.
Consult with the Health Social Work Department  and other appropriate departments in all cases of suspected or actual child abuse or neglect. Call 312-996-0293 or the social worker on your service.
3.
Inform parents of the reason the report is being made in a tactful, non-accusatory manner.
4.
Immediately call the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (IDCFS) 24-hour State Central Registry  Child  Abuse  Hotline at  1-800-25ABUSE.
The call should be made by the staff member or mandated reporter who has identified a suspected case of abuse or neglect.
5.
Document detailed information in Gemini as soon as possible including your reasons why abuse or neglect is suspected.
6.
Have color photographs and x-rays taken of the trauma area to substantiate child abuse or neglect per a physician's order.
7.
If hospitalization is indicated, follow regular admission procedures.
8.
Consult the Hospital Administrator on call and  your unit social worker if IDCFS refuses to accept a report.
9.
Fill out the IDCFS Reporting Form (CANTS-4) and forward it to the Department of Health Social Work in Room 1155 UIH.
10.
Present your findings at the next Child Protection Team Conference which meets in the Pediatric Conference Room, 501-E UIH, from 2:00-4:00 pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.
