Core Curriculum General Requirements for All Residents and Fellows 2007-2008
When did you begin your current training program?
Prior to June 1, 2007
On or After June 1, 2007
If you began your residency or fellowship prior to June 1, 2007 and your program does not have specific and/or additional module requirements, you may choose modules according to your own interests to complete four modules per year or a total of 10 modules for a three-year or longer program. If you began your residency or fellowship program on or after June 1, 2007 and your program does not have additional module requirements, you must first complete GME Module 114, “Introduction to the General Competencies,” followed by the required modules (101, 103, 106, 107, 111 and 115 in any order,) to complete four modules per year or a total of 10 modules for a three-year or longer program.
For both options, please note: Always check with your program director to find out if your program has additional and/or program-specific requirements.

  
Core Curriculum Teaching Skills Workshops for PGY1s
PGY1 Residents:   REGISTER NOW for Mandatory Teaching Skills Workshops
To fulfill mandatory first-year Core Curriculum requirements, PGY1 residents must complete a total of three Teaching Skills workshops including the workshop presented at GME New Resident Orientation last June or at GME Mid-Year New Resident Orientation in January 2008. The following workshops are still available:
  Teaching in Small Groups:  Wednesday, May 14, 3:30 - 5:00 PM
  Teaching through Lectures:  Wednesday, May 21, 3:30 - 5:00 PM

Core Curriculum - Highlighting GME 105:
Health Care Monitoring and Regulatory Systems and Agencies
Module Description:
This module reviews the social, political and professional purposes served by regulatory systems in health care. It explores the role and pertinent regulations emanating from public health departments, accreditation and certifying agencies, and the medical aspects of environmental and occupational health. Additionally, it examines the role of professional organizations in monitoring, guiding, and directing the practice of medicine.
Educational Objectives:
   Describe the role of the public health system in the monitoring and maintenance of health care goals of society
   Discuss the role and implementation of accreditation and certification in health care organizations
   Identify the key purposes and regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA)
   Identify and discuss the role and effectiveness of key medical professional organizations
ACGME/ABMS Competencies Addressed in GME 105
Systems-Based Practice:
Understand how your patient care and other professional practices affect other health care professionals, the health care organization, and the larger society, and how these elements of the system affect your own practice.

  
Core Curriculum - Highlighting GME 108:
Managing a Successful Medical Practice
Module Description:
Upon initial entry into practice, physicians are often thrust into business situations and confronted with decisions that they are unprepared to handle. This module exposes participants in a comprehensive and coherent manner to those issues, decisions, and management abilities they will need in a variety of practice situations, including solo practice, group practice, fee-for-service, salaried practice, and managed care.
Educational Objectives:
   Understand the basic practice models and their key characteristics
   Be aware of the essentials of medical practice budget management
   Comprehend the critical aspects of medical practice contract negotiation
   Appreciate the nature of medical practice accountability to patients and institutions
   Demonstrate awareness of the issues related to:
   referral relationships in practice
   hospitals and professional affiliations for practice
   managing physical facilities for practice
   managing ancillary services
   personnel recruitment, supervision and evaluation, compensation and benefits
   managing office services, communication systems, appointment systems
   medical records, health insurance claims coding, disease coding, death certificates
   ethical and legal issues related to medical practice
ACGME/ABMS Competencies Addressed in GME 108
Interpersonal Skills and Communication:
   Work effectively with others as a member or leader of a health care team or other professional group
Professionalism:
   Demonstrate a commitment to ethical principles pertaining to provision or withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and business practices.
Systems-Based Practice:
   Know how types of medical practice and delivery systems differ from one another, including methods of controlling health care costs and allocating resources
   Practice cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care
   Advocate for quality patient care and assist patients in dealing with system complexities

   If leaving UIC, you must complete both parts (left and right columns) of Section 2.*

*NOTE:  You are not authorized to enter any signatures or initial any blanks in Section 2. If you have any questions about signatures, please contact the GME Office, 312-996-2933.
   Have you met all of the conditions listed in Section 3, GME CLEARANCE?
   Have you provided the following documents to the GME Office?
   Most up-to-date version of ECFMG certificate, if applicable
   Notification of Termination as Exchange Visitor, if applicable
   Copy of Illinois Temporary Medical License(s)**
   Copy of Illinois Permanent Medical License**
**Note: Medical licenses must cover full length of training (all programs) at UIMCC
   Copy of updated CV in mm/dd/yyyy format with no gaps between graduation from Medical or Dental school through the end of your training program(s) at UIMCC
   All mandatory Duty Hours and Institutional Issues evaluations completed through the New Innovations Residency Management Suite software
   If you have provided these documents, your GME Office residency and/or fellowship file is complete.
   Have you secured your Program Director's checks and signature in Section 4, PROGRAM DIRECTOR CLEARANCE?
   Sign and date your Clearance Form (back of form.)
   Submit your clearance form at the reception desk in the GME Office.
   REQUEST A COPY OF YOUR FULLY EXECUTED CLEARANCE FORM BEFORE LEAVING THE GME OFFICE.
   Receive your Certificate of training in person or arrange to receive it by mail.

Mandatory TB Surveillance for Current Residents and Fellows - PAST DUE
All Current Residents and Fellows:  Please see section “6.5 C” in the “Inoculations and Referrals” section of GME Policy VI. “Resident Health Policies.”
“C.     Annual or Semi Annual TB Screening is required for all residents. This is coordinated through UHS [University Health Services] and the Residency Coordinator. The Resident Agreements for PGY2-PGY7 residents will not be completed until the resident is compliant with annual and/or semi annual TB screening.”
If you have not yet fulfilled this annual or biannual mandatory requirement in April 2008, contact your program coordinator immediately.
