Graduate Medical Education Committee Resident Representatives Election 2008
GME is seeking nominations for residents who would like to serve on the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC).  The GMEC is the governing body that provides oversight for all residency and some fellowship programs in the College of Medicine as well as programs in the College of Dentistry.  This committee is chaired by L. J. Sandlow, M.D., Senior Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, and includes selected residency Program Directors from all disciplines and peer-selected residents. The GMEC meets for one hour on the first Friday of each month at 8:00 am.
The GMEC establishes and implements policies and procedures for residents in all programs regarding:
Stipends and Position Allocation:  Provides annual review and recommendations to the Sponsoring Institution regarding resident stipends, benefits and funding for resident positions
Communication with Program Directors:  Ensures that communication mechanisms exist between the GMEC and all program directors, and ensures that program directors maintain effective communication mechanisms with the site directors at each participating institution
Resident Duty Hours:  Develops and implements written policies and procedures to ensure compliance with Institutional, Common, and specialty/subspecialty-specific Program Requirements, and considers requests from program directors for duty hours exceptions
Resident Supervision:  Monitors programs’ supervision of residents and ensures that supervision is consistent with the provision of safe, effective patient care; residents’ educational needs; and progressive responsibility appropriate to the residents’ level of education, competence and experience
Communication with Medical Staff:  Ensures communication regarding the safety and quality of patient care
Curriculum and Evaluation:  Ensures that each program provides a curriculum and evaluation system that enables residents to demonstrate achievement of the ACGME general competencies
Resident Status:  Monitors selection, evaluation, promotion, transfer, discipline, and/or dismissal of residents
Oversight of Program Accreditation:  Reviews all ACGME program accreditation letters and monitors action plans for correction of citations and areas of noncompliance
Management of Institutional Accreditation:  Reviews the Institution's ACGME letter of notification and monitors action plans for correction of citations and areas of noncompliance
Oversight for:  Program changes; Educational experiments and innovations; Program reductions and closures; and Vendor interactions
