Child Abuse or Neglect Reporting Procedure at UIMCC
As a University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago (UIMCC) resident or fellow, you are a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect, and consequently are required to know the Illinois Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act [325 ILCS 5/4]. A summary copy of the law is available for review in the GME Office and available through the Illinois General Assembly Compiled Statutes website at:
Following is an excerpt from UIMCC Management Policy and Procedure No. TX 1.05, “Identification and Management of Victims of Abuse or Neglect,” February 2006.
1. Gather documented information to evaluate whether there is a case of suspected child abuse or neglect.
2. Consult with the Department of Health Social Work and any appropriate medical services regarding suspected child abuse or neglect in order to complete evaluation prior to reporting.
3. In a tactful, non-accusatory manner, inform parent(s) or other responsible adult why a report is being submitted.
4. Call the 24-hour DCFS State Central Registry (Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-25-ABUSE.) Following collaboration with the medical social worker, the staff member who has identified a suspected case of child abuse or neglect should make this call. If known, the following information is provided:
a. Name and address of child and parent or other persons having custody;
b. Child's age;
c. Nature of child's condition, including evidence of previous injuries (when appropriate, physician should record visually evident marks on CANTS Form 418-0302, http://www.state.il.us/dcfs/cants4.pdf.)
d. Other information which might be helpful in establishing cause of child abuse and neglect (CA/N) and who may have perpetrated it. This information must be confirmed in writing after the initial telephone report; and
e. Indicate whether local law enforcement agencies are aware of suspected CA/N if appropriate.
5. Give the completed CANTS form and any supporting documentation to the medical social worker on service. The social worker then reviews and submits completed form to the Coordinator of the Child Protection Team (6-0293.)

End of Your Training Program
Telephone: 877-DME-ONLN (877-363-6656)
Don't get snowed under at the end of your training program! Complete at least one GME Online Core Curriculum module every three months to avoid the rush in the spring. To stay on schedule, you need to complete your second 2007-2008 Core Curriculum module by the end of this month.

GME Online Core Curriculum
Telephone: 877-DME-ONLN (877-363-6656)
The general GME Core Curriculum requirement for all residents and fellows is to complete four modules per year during your training program.
   If you began a three-year or longer residency or fellowship program on or after June 1, 2007, you must first complete GME 114, “Introduction to the General Competencies,” followed by six required modules, GME 101, 103, 106, 107, 111 and 115, and then a minimum of three elective modules to complete a total of 10 modules. Please check with your program director for program-specific Core Curriculum requirements which may exceed the 10-module requirement.
   If you began your residency or fellowship prior to June 1, 2007 and your program does not have specific module requirements, you may choose modules according to your own interests in order to complete four modules per year or a total of 10 modules for a three-year or longer program.
   For a full description of the 2007-2008 Core Curriculum requirements, see the July 2007 issue of the GME Times by selecting “GME Times” from the GME Office homepage.
   Always check with your program director to find out if your program has additional and/or program-specific requirements in addition to those listed in the July 2007 issue of the GME Times.

This month, the following Teaching Skills Workshops will be offered:

Registration is required. To register, send email to faculty_dev_dme@uic.edu at least two weeks before the workshop you'd like to attend. Please list in your email your first, second and third choices. You will be registered for two workshops on a first-come basis. Residents in offsite programs do not need to register by email unless they miss one or more of the workshops provided at their locations.
