Call Frequency
Call frequency on in-patient units is every fourth night and weekend throughout the three years (about 6 months in each year). ER shifts are 10 hours; PGY 1's are not on call overnight in the ER. Residents have one call-free month in both the 1st and 2nd years and two call-free months in the 3rd.
PGY1: Primary Care & Supervised Learning
Primary care is emphasized during this year. Four rotations are spent in the general inpatient services, providing experience in the medical management of children of all ages from infancy through adolescence. Additional rotations are devoted to the care of newborn infants, and experience in the intermediate care nurseries. At least three rotations are spent in ambulatory care, which includes emergency room experience. Each first-year resident also completes one rotation in community pediatrics, one month in the Step Down unit of the PICU, and one month of elective.
The night call schedule for the year is usually no more than every fourth night. While in the ambulatory rotation, there will be an 8-10 hour evening or weekend shift every 4th day, with no overnight call. The resident's work is closely supervised throughout the year by house officers at the second- and third-year level, as well as by the chief resident and the attending staff. The first-year resident in turn plays an important role in teaching medical students and also contributes importantly to the continuing education of fellow house officers and faculty.
PGY2: Acute Care/Critical Care & Required Subspecialties
Acute care responsibilities are phased in this year with 2 months in NICU, 1 month in PICU, and 1 month dedicated to ER. Ambulatory pediatrics is given even greater emphasis in the PGY-2 year, with the resident devoting at least three rotations to outpatient and emergency-room care, one rotation to adolescent pediatrics, and one to the Developmental Pediatrics. Night call on inpatient rotations is no more than 1 in 4 nights. Additionally, residents have one call-free month during the year. The PGY-2 year also includes three elective rotations.
PGY3: Supervisory Role & Professional Development
House officers at the PGY-3 level assume major supervisory responsibility for the care of infants and children in all of the clinical areas. They also have a very important role in the teaching program. Supervisory duties in the general inpatient and outpatient services include conducting bedside rounds, organizing conferences, and teaching sessions for other house staff and students. One rotation is spent in the pediatric intensive care unit. Elective experiences make up three rotations in the PGY-3 year. Each resident also has at least 2 call-free rotations. A month of “Selective” tailored to the personal & professional need of the individual resident was added recently. A variety of options are available for this experience. Residents are encouraged to be informed about ongoing research in the Department and for those interested in participating in research activity, there are ample opportunities.
