The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is the largest institution of higher learning in the Chicago area, one of the top 70 research universities in the United States, and an increasingly significant center for education and research. The UIC campus is located directly west of Chicago's Loop (the downtown business district); in an area that includes two historic landmark neighborhoods, as well as the Illinois Medical Center -- the world's largest concentration of advanced public and private health care facilities.

Located in the heart of the Illinois Medical District, the UIC hospital caters to a diverse population. UIC hospital is 500 bed facility of modern design and advanced technology. A new state of the art ambulatory center opened in August 2000 and boasts over 20 examining rooms, a large transfusion/infusion area, and all diagnostic services. Annually at the Children and Adolescent Center, we see over 32,500 pediatric patients including over
11,400 subspecialty visits. With pediatric specialists in the fields of Allergy/ Immunology, Adolescents, Critical Care, Cardiology, Dermatology, Development, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Genetics, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Nephrology (with our own dialysis unit), Psychiatry, and Surgery, both the inpatient and outpatient services ensure a wide variety of patient cases. The Pediatric Floor has 24 inpatient beds and 21 PICU beds including a step down unit. The neonatal intensive care, intermediate care, and observation setting, with a 51 bed capacity, exposes residents to a broad spectrum of neonatal problems as well. There is also a busy mother/normal newborn service.

The emergency room, the critical care units, and other specialized areas utilize the most advanced technical equipment. And in all areas, order-writing and laboratory data retrieval is accomplished exclusively through the centralized computer facility known as the “Gemini” system, which revolutionizes patient care through electronic medical records.

The nationally renowned Eye & Ear Infirmary which has a busy clinic with multiple services for children is connected to the new ambulatory care center. The Pediatric Dental Clinic is housed in a building next to the main hospital.

The College of Medicine at UIC is one of the nation's largest, with a century of tradition in medical education. The College is organized with clinical programs in Chicago, Peoria, Rockford, and Urbana / Champaign.
