

Conferences:
1. Disease Oriented Clinical Conference: Faculty, fellows,
and invited speakers
review Pulmonary and Critical Care topics (Monday at 4:00-5:00, weekly).
This
program is mandatory for all fellows and clinical faculty.
2. Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Case Conference: Fellows
and faculty
present and discuss diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to pulmonary
and
critical care patients (Monday at 5:00-6:00, weekly). This program
is mandatory
for all clinical fellows and faculty.
3. Principles of Practical Pulmonology: This weekly conference
focuses on basic
and ICU procedures for the first month, pulmonary physiology for the
next two
months, and basic topics not attached to a specific disease thereafter.
The
conference is held on Thursdays at 4:00-5:00, weekly. Topics repeated
biannually. This program is mandatory for all clinical fellows and
faculty.
4. Research Conference: Members of the section and invited
speakers present
research in progress at this conference, which takes place on Friday
at noon from
September through May. Conferences in early May are devoted to practice
sessions for presentation at the annual meeting of the American Thoracic
Society. Attendance at this conference is encouraged for all fellows
and
mandatory for those involved in our research program.
5. Medical-Surgical Case Conference: This conference discusses
patients
who may require thoracic surgery. It is attended by faculty from Thoracic
Surgery,
Medical Oncology, and PCCSM (Friday 3:30, weekly). This conference
is
mandatory for the PCCSM attendings and fellows on the consultation
and
bronchoscopy services at UIH&C and the JB-VAMC.
6. Pathology Course: Dr. Sekosan, a Pulmonary pathologist,
discusses slides
that have reviewed by PCCSM fellows and pathology residents. This
is held
twice weekly in September, October, and November at the John Stroger,
Cook County Hospital, across the street from the UIH&C and the
JB-VAMC. This program is
highly encouraged for all fellows and is very useful for those preparing
to take
the board examinations in pulmonary medicine.
7. Sleep Conferences: Fellows have an opportunity to review
interesting
patients histories and interpret polysomnographs at this monthly conference.
This
conference is mandatory for fellows interested in obtaining special
qualifications
in sleep medicine and those rotating on the sleep service.
8. City Wide Tuberculosis Conference: Difficult TB patient
cases are reviewed in a
city wide conference 5 times annually. Attendance at the conference
is required
for all clinical fellows. TB

9. Chicago Thoracic Society Meeting: The Chicago Thoracic Society
holds a
highly successful city-wide monthly conference from September to June
at the
American Lung Association. Nationally recognized speakers are invited
to
present timely issues related to Pulmonary and Critical Care medicine.
All faculty
and fellows are encouraged to attend.
