American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons inducts UIC Chief, Dr. Cohen, as President
Dr. Mimis Cohen, is the Chief of the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgery at the University of
Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago. At "Plastic Surgery 2009", held in Seattle, he was named, President of the American Society of
Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS). Dr. Cohen also oversees the activities of the
Craniofacial Center at UIC. He is also affiliated with Sinai Medical Center.
Seattle's "Plastic Surgery 2009"; the joint annual
scientific meeting of ASMS and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
(ASPS) is the world's biggest plastic surgery association and maintains expertise in the area of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.
"It is my hope that as President I will be able to expand our society's
educational programs, increase the number of members and establish an
endowment to support future activities," said Dr Cohen, who will serve a
one-year term as ASMS President.
Dr. Cohen completed his medical degree at the University of Athens,
Greece. He completed his Master Thesis and a
general surgery residency there, as well. Dr. Cohen completed a second general surgery
residency and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Illinois
at Chicago. He completed a fellowship in Head and Neck Surgery at
Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York.
Dr. Cohen has been
in practice for twenty-six years. In 1983, he acquired his American Board of Plastic
Surgery Certification. He has been involved as an ASMS member for 24 years. Additionally, Dr. Cohen has served as ASMS
President-Elect, Vice President, Member-at-large and Historian. He has
also served on and chaired several committees including education,
program, outcomes, best paper and Maxillofacial News, and he is
currently the Associate Editor of the Plastic Surgery Hyperguide, a
web-based publication sponsored by ASMS. Dr. Cohen has also been
Past-President of the American Association of Pediatric Plastic
Surgeons, the Chicago Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Midwest
Association of Plastic surgeons. He served on the Council of Plastic
Surgery Organizations and the ASPS Patient Care Parameter Committee,
among others.
Dr. Cohen has published over 300 peer review papers, abstract and book
chapters. Additionally, he was the editor for the three volumes textbook,
Mastery of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and co-editor of the
textbook, Unfavorable Results in Plastic Surgery: Avoidance and
Treatment.
The American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons is the oldest
organization representing maxillofacial surgeons. The members of the
ASMS are surgeons of high moral and ethical standing and professional
attainment, who hold both the MD and DDS or DMD degrees, or only the MD
degree. The mission of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons is
to advance the science and practice of surgery of the facial region and
the craniofacial skeleton. The Society accomplishes its mission through
excellence in education and research, and through advocacy on behalf of
patients and practitioners.
