Applicant Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Surgical Residency Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The surgical residency program currently participates in ERAS for the submittal of a residency application. Applications submitted directly to the program will not be accepted. All applications to the program must be submitted by November 1.

At the present time we can only consider applicants with the appropriate J-1 visa sponsored through the ECFMG.  The program offers seven categorical and two preliminary first year positions.  An optional two-year research experience is offered to residents at the end of the R-2 clinical year.

The Program does not offer any positions before the match.  We have no minimum USMLE score requirements and no requirements concerning the number of years
since medical school graduation. In addition, we have no specific criteria for selection as the entire application is considered.

All applications to the program are evaluated and reviewed by the Program Director. When selecting candidates to interview for the General Surgery Residency Program, the following sections are evaluated:

  • Medical transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal Summary

Applicants are extensively screened and interviewed by faculty and residents.
