THE MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHETICS CLINIC

The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic is an integral part of The Craniofacial Center at the UIC Medical Center. It is one of the most comprehensive facilities in the country providing oral and facial prosthetic rehabilitation. The goals are to restore normal speech, eating, appearance, and quality of life for each patient. Patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial birth conditions or oral and facial defects as the result of craniofacial trauma or head and neck cancer are seen for comprehensive care. The clinic also provides comprehensive oral care for patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy or for those undergoing organ transplant treatment.

The staff includes a board certified maxillofacial prosthodontist, two anaplastologists (medical artists), a board certified ocularist, and a board certified dental laboratory technician. This highly skilled and experienced team provides a wide array of custom made functional and cosmetic oral and facial prostheses.

Services include obturators, palatal augmentations, palatal lifts and related prostheses to replace missing parts of the jaw, palate, and teeth to restore normal speech, eating, and appearance. Prostheses to replace missing eyes, ears, nose, or limbs are also a main focus of the clinic. The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic has an internationally recognized program utilizing osseointegrated implants in conjunction with oral and facial prostheses to provide a more natural result. In fact, the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic was one of the original sites for the US study to gain FDA approval for the use of osseointegrated implants as safe and effective for the retention of artificial eyes, ears, and nose prostheses.

Because the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic is an integral part of The Craniofacial Center, it has all of its many medical specialty services available to its patients. Team members in the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic work closely with Craniofacial Center team members to improve patient care outcomes and the quality of life.

While patient care is a major focus in The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic, education and research are also parts of the mission. The clinic offers postgraduate training programs in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Laboratory Technology. In addition, the program to train medical artists to make facial prostheses in a clinical setting is the first and only one of its kind in the world.

Current focuses of research include three dimensional imaging to enhance presurgical implant planning for both oral and facial prostheses, prevention of post treatment trismus (inability to open the jaw), and improved techniques for craniofacial surgical and prosthetic rehabilitation.

The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic offers comprehensive, interdisciplinary care in a private office environment. Major medical insurance is accepted. The clinic works closely with all carriers to maximize benefits for patients. The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic welcomes referrals or inquires from physicians, surgeons, dentists, allied health care professionals, or health care service agencies
