TESTICULAR SCAN

INDICATIONS:

  1. Used to differentiate acute testicular torsion from other causes of testicular pain/swelling.
  2. Differentiate epididymitis from torsion.
  3. Evaluate scrotal mass.

PATIENT PREPARATION:

No specific preparation required.

RADIOPHARMACEUTICAL:

20 mCi of 99mTcO4 pertechnetate is given I.V. (adult dose).

SCANNING TIME:

Approximately 30 minutes.

RATIONALE:

This study demonstrates the presence or absence of perfusion to the testes. Flow is decreased or absent with torsion; epididymitis and orchitis have normal or increased perfusion.

NOTE: This study may be ordered on an emergency basis.
