e) Areas of special interest:

1.      Functional Brain SPECT (Single Photon Computed Tomography) Evaluation:

Following a  sabbatical at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland, Dr. Pavel has adapted the use of Statistic Parametric Mapping (SPM) to the evaluation of routine diagnostic brain SPECT images. This method was previously used only in PET studies and group comparisons but not for individual diagnostic assessment. In conjunction with SPM, other image processing methods including multimodality fusion of functional maps and anatomic images have been implemented (see illustration attached).

The comparison of the SPM abnormality maps with the standard qualitative evaluation of brain SPECT has shown that the interpretation of images is easier, more reproducible and more reliable for the evaluation of changes, or lack thereof, occurring within the respective paired brain SPECT studies.
