The Role of Suburban Local Governments in Social Service Delivery
Rebecca Hendrick and Karen Mossberger, associate professors in CUPPA's Public Administration Department, presented at a meeting of the human services committee of CMAP the results of a study on the role of suburban local governments in social service delivery. The study, based on financial data, census data, and surveys of suburban townships and municipalities, was funded by the Chicago Community Trust. Poverty has been increasing the suburban communities, and the economic crisis has made the need for social services even more acute. Yet, social service provision is uneven and the capacity to do more is limited, especially in some poor communities. The results will be released in a report sometime in February or early March.

Uchitelle will examine the dismantling of job security over the past two decades and the search for work by an increasingly restive labor force today. As the Obama administration designs programs to put America back to work, what will this mean for the millions of workers today who are faced with layoffs, furloughs, and mounting bills? How will the increasingly antagonistic labor environment in the US challenge, participate and cooperate with the new administration in an economic era the likes of which haven't been experienced in over three-quarters of a century? What does the new generation of Okies, searching for work and moving from job to job, look like at the dawn of a new administration?
