PA PhD Candidate Receives Award
PhD candidate, Benedict Jimenez, received the Distinguished Scholar Award for 2009 by the Graduate College. Award recipients are considered most outstanding in their program of study. Benedict also received the Donald Stone Award for best graduate paper in Intergovernmental Affairs and Management for 2008 by the Section on Intergovernmental Affairs and Management of the American Society of Public Administration.

Public Management Fellow Payton Announced
MPA student Richard Payton was recently named a Presidential Management Fellow and will be joining the U.S. Agency for International Development as a Performance Improvement Specialist helping U.S. AID and partner organizations on human and institutional capacity development initiatives for overseas educational programs (e.g. teacher training in Latin America or school operations in Afghanistan and Iraq).

Marr Receives Savannah Management Fellow
MPA student Garrison Marr was named a Management Fellow for the City of Savannah, Georgia. Garrison is one of only two fellows and will be working with the Bureau of Public Development to develop the city's MBE/WBE program among other things.

CFEB honors Two PA Students
The Chicago Federal Executive Board will award Public Administration students Teresa Krzyzanowski and Rafael Alexander Figueroa with $2000 scholarship awards at the annual award ceremony in May.

UPA Student Numbers
Of the first UPA cohort that began in 2008 there are 12 students graduating in Spring 2009, one graduating in Summer 2009, three graduating in Fall 2009 and two graduating in Spring 2010. Of the 25 students from the second cohort group that began core courses in fall 2008 all are returning to complete their senior year. Four additional students began in Spring 2009 and they are also returning and will begin their core courses in Fall 2009. Six of the 25 cohort group accepted into the UPA program in Fall 2008 have been studying abroad through the Atlantis program. Their first semester in Fall 2008 was at the University of the West of England and they are now in their second semester at Politecnico di Milano. The UPA program has accepted 24 applicants for the Fall 2009 cohort group. Admission into the UPA program is still open and we continue to process incoming applications with the expectation of reaching 30 new applicants for Fall 2009.

e-Gov Certificate Approved
Public Administration's new certificate program in e-Government has been approved. A total of five courses will be offered as part of the program of which participants have to take three. Three of the courses are already offered as part of the concentration in Information and Performance Management: PA 460 Data Management, PA 461 Management of Information Technology in Government and PA 463 Internet and Public Administration. Project Management, which has been taught as a special topics course, will now be a regular course. The fifth course is a new course entitled GIS for Public Managers. http://www.uic.edu/cuppa/pa/egovernment/.

Geospatial Analysis and Visualization Certificate Approved
The Campus Certificate in Geospatial Analysis and Visualization has been approved for Fall, 2009.

UPP's Zellner to Attend Sustainability Institute
UPP Assistant Professor Moira Zellner has been invited to the Global Sustainability Summer School at the Santa Fe Institute, a private, not-for-profit, independent research and education center founded in 1984, for multidisciplinary collaborations in the physical, biological, computational, and social sciences. Zellner's program is an intensive two-week program which explores global sustainability from many perspectives with particular focus on problems posed by climate change. With enrollment limited to 30 participants, the school will include graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, junior and senior faculty, and individuals from the private sector.

CUPPA Alumni Association Board Meeting and Annual Elections May 19
The annual meeting and election of the CUPPA Alumni Association will be held in CUPPA Hall room 110 on Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. Those interested in joining the board or those in need of more information should contact Jodi White Jones, jmwhite@uic.edu, by May 10. The slate of nominatees will be posted on the CUPPAAA website, www.uic.edu/cuppa/alumni, and will be distributed on the alumni listserve after May 10.

 

COMINGS and PROMOTIONS:

Nilay Yavuz, PA doctoral candidate and UTC research assistant, gave birth to a baby boy, Yunus Berke, on Wednesday, March 11, 2009.
Alfred Pinto, business and financial systems specialist in the Dean's Office, and his wife had a baby girl, Aviya, on Friday, April 10, 2009.
