Many developments
have moved our college forward in our quest for continued national
and international prominence over
the last year. We’ve
hired new faculty and staff; we’ve said good-bye to a few.
We’ve recruited top students in both the Public Administration
and Urban Planning and Policy masters and PhD programs. We’ve
raised more funds for students and for faculty research than
ever before, and we have set new far-reaching goals to continue
our
successes. I am thrilled
to be able to record a truly major step forward in the life of
the college – in June 2006 the Illinois Board of Higher
Education approved our proposal to create an entirely new undergraduate
program. Set to launch in the fall of 2007, CUPPA will offer
a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Urban and Public Affairs.
We expect about 20 undergraduate students to enter the first
year of this dynamic interdisciplinary program – a program
designed to appeal to future leaders of the multi-cultural city
- and to grow the intake in the years ahead.
Over the past
year, the Urban Planning and Policy (UPP) program received accreditation
from the Planning Accreditation Board after an in depth examination
of the program. The board was very positive in their comments
on the educational experience we offer and we have received formal
recognition through to 2010. For students this provides a highly
valued quality stamp of approval from senior figures in the profession.
It guarantees that the education received in UPP is of the best.
For alumni, it gives your degree renewed significance among your
peers – it speaks to the high standards that you uphold
in your profession.
Since the inception
of an accrediting program for Public Administration, CUPPA’s
PA program has been recognized under the guidelines of the National
Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
This next year, PA will once again undergo a rigorous accreditation
review process. We look forward to this challenge and we will
keep you updated on our results.
Embarking on
my fifth year as dean of CUPPA, I thank you for the support you’ve
given me and the college over these last few years. The significant
strides forward we’ve taken and the success we have achieved
couldn’t have come without your contributions as class
speakers, mentors, course and event attendees, advisors, and
donors. Please continue to support us and let us know what we
can do for you.
