Great Cities Faculty Scholar Seminar
The next Great Cities Faculty Scholar Seminar will be held on:
Wednesday, January 29 at 9:00 am in the large conference room
Faculty Scholar Dennis Judd will lead a discussion on the following topic:
"The Death of Local Democracy: Policy Communities and the New Institutional Power"
In recent years Dennis Judd has been engaged in a series of research projects on urban tourism;
recent publications include The Tourist City (co-edited with Susan S. Fainstein; Yale University
Press, 1999), The Infrastructure of Play (M.E. Sharpe, 2003), and Cities and Visitors
(Edited with Lily Hoffman and Susan Fainstain; Blackwell, 2003). His research is now focused
upon the way in which the inter-urban competition for tourism is changing the institutional
structure of local politics by lodging increasing fiscal and administrative resources in special
authorities that are insulated from public accountability. Dr. Judd is a professor in the
Department of Political Science.
For background reading prior to the seminar, attached are two readings by Dr. Judd (et al). Please join us....we look forward to seeing you. (Light breakfast refreshments will be served.)
