RAPID URBAN GROWTH: MISCONCEPTIONS AND POLICIES

George Martine
President, Brazilian Association for Population Studies
Consultant, United Nations Population Fund

Wednesday, April 30, 1 - 2:00 p.m.

CUPPA Hall 110

The next few decades will witness a scale of urban growth unprecedented in human history. The very force and magnitude of this process will have enormous implications for development as well as for sustainability. The recent literature is optimistic about the potential benefits of urbanization – particularly if proactive approaches to it are adopted. Nevertheless, various misconceptions induce increasingly negative mindsets on urbanization among policymakers in developing countries. Thus, rapid slum growth and environmental degradation seem to be undermining the positive features of urban growth. A novel approach to these problems, based on the primacy of social and environmental initiatives, is suggested.
