What academic programs are available through the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs?

CUPPA offers graduate degree programs in Public Administration and in Urban Planning and Policy. These include the NASPAA-accredited Master of Public Administration Program, Illinois’s only PhD Program in Public Administration, the PAB-accredited Master of Urban Planning and Policy Program, and the PhD Program in Urban Planning and Policy.

Does CUPPA offer nondegree courses and online certificate programs?

Yes. If you’d like to take traditional graduate-level courses for personal enrichment or professional development purposes, you can enroll as a nondegree student in either of our academic programs. See their websites, www.uic.edu/cuppa/pa or www.uic.edu/cuppa/upp for details on how to apply for nondegree admission.

If you would prefer to take online courses, the Office of Professional Education of our Great Cities Institute offers an expanding selection of non-credit certificate programs in such areas as Nonprofit Management, Public Housing, and Planning.

How can I learn more about your academic programs?

If you’d like to visit the College to learn more about our degree programs and discuss your interests with faculty, please plan to attend one of our Open House events. How do I apply to a graduate program in CUPPA?

Admission requirements for the Master of Public Administration (MPA), the Ph.D. in Public Administration, the Master of Urban Planning & Policy (MUPP), and the Ph.D. in Urban Planning can be found on each academic unit’s Web site respectively at www.uic.edu/cuppa/pa and www.uic.edu/cuppa/upp.

Will I have an advisor in a CUPPA graduate program?

Once admitted to a CUPPA graduate program, your degree program office will provide you with a faculty advisor who will assist and guide you in the pursuit of your degree. Assignments will be made based on your course of study and/or research interests.

Is financial aid available?

Q. Where are CUPPA graduates employed?

A. Public Administration and Urban Planning and Policy graduates work in the public, nonprofit, and private sectors. Government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels employ many of our MPAs and MUPPS. Chicago is also the site of many community development organizations/corporations and policy groups, which employ many of our alumni.

Q. How do I audit a class?

A. The privilege of attending class as an auditor (visitor) is granted on or after the first day of instruction and only by the instructor of the class. Visitor Permit forms may be obtained from the Office of Registration and Records no later than the tenth day of the semester (fifth day of summer session).

A $15 fee is charged for the privilege of visiting/auditing a class. A full-time registered student or a person who is a permanent support staff employee of the University does not pay the visitor fee.
