This presentation explores the concept of third space within the academy, as a bridge
between scholarship and the places and people of research. The central figure of the discussion is the academician.
Building on existing literature and the establishment of a transformatory research initiative, three third spacing
strategies are identified: 1) rediscovering the researcher; 2) living in the global context; and 3) (re)searching
epistemologies, ontologies and methodologies. Each of these is discussed, along with their implications.
Benet DeBerry-Spence's research explores consumer creative processes that involve cross-cultural
consumption, and emphasizes the experiences of African and African Diaspora consumers. Dr. DeBerry-Spence has
extended this work to include scholars working with consumers in developing countries and with research
agendas characterized as transformative.
