The goals of the presentation
are to review the evidence regarding the relationship between urbanicity and nonresponse
and its effects on survey data, to describe some possible mechanisms for this relationship
and to discuss possible methods for assessing these mechanisms and improving response
to surveys in urban areas.
Allyson Holbrook is an Assistant Professor in Public Administration and at
the Survey Research Laboratory at UIC. Her research and teaching deal with improving the
methodology used to conduct surveys, and address issues such as questionnaire design and
survey nonresponse. She will be presenting initial work examining the relationship
between urbanicity and nonresponse. Specifically, this work focuses on the finding that
participation in surveys is lower in urban areas than in rural areas.
