Roland Martin On Race and Education features the social commentary of journalist and public intellectual Roland Martin on issues that sit at the intersection of race and education in the US and how those issues impact key social, political, and economic outcomes in this country.

Roland S. Martin is a nationally syndicated columnist, host of the Roland S. Martin show on WVON-AM in Chicago, a commentator for TV One cable network, and a contributor to CNN. The former Executive Director of the Chicago Defender, Roland Martin has served as editor of Savoy Magazine, the Houston Defender, the Dallas Weekly, and BlackAmericaWeb.com. Roland Martin is also the author of Listening to the Spirit Within: 50 Perspectives on Faith, and Speak, Brother! A Black Man's View of America, books for which he has been recognized for his honest and refreshing perspectives on issues of race, sports, social justice, and the media. He has appeared as a commentator on many television news programs, including Paula Zahn Now, Anderson Cooper 360, and Lou Dobbs Tonight.

Roland Martin has won more than 20 professional awards for journalistic excellence, including a regional Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television News Directors; several first place awards from the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Communicators; two citations from the National Associated Press-Managing Editors Conference; the top sports reporting award in 1997 from the National Association of Black Journalists; and honors from the Houston Press Club.

This lecture is one of a series as part of the Vernon D. Jarrett Senior Fellow Program – a program established by the Vernon D. Jarrett Foundation. In the tradition of Vernon Jarrett’s contribution to open discussion of important urban issues, the program offers a lecture series, which brings public intellectuals to share their analysis of current issues.
