A new university-community partnership is underway in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Supported by the Oak Foundation of Geneva, Switzerland, the University of Illinois at Chicago
and Addis Ababa University have begun working with leaders of the Gedam Sefer neighborhood,
carrying out action research, mobilizing a community-based working group, and preparing a
two-year community development process. This US-African initiative holds considerable potential
for broader research, teaching, and service partnerships between the two universities. The
presentation will discuss the project and discuss its possible future directions.
Alice K. Johnson-Butterfield’s research in the U.S. focuses on community practice.
Her international work includes higher education partnerships in Ethiopia and asset-based community
development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She teaches policy analysis and development at the Jane Addams
College of Social Work. As a Visiting Professor at Addis Ababa University, she is teaching community
assessment, action research, and knowledge building in Social Work and Social Development.
Richard Kordesh’s research investigates the productive uses of family housing and
habitat in the community development process. His work on the topic in the US is funded by the Annie
E. Casey Foundation. He teaches community development seminars in the Urban Planning and Policy Program at UIC
and will begin teaching graduate policy analysis and design seminars at Addis Ababa University in May 2008.
