Students Affiliated with GCI Win International Award

Congratulations to the four Urban Planning & Public Affairs graduate students Jieun Kim, Marcela Lopez, Meng Sun, and Yochai Eisenberg who won third prize for the “Glamorous Guangxi 2007” International Student Competition for a Conceptual Urban Design of the City of Dongxing, China. Two of the students are affiliated with GCI: Yochai Eisenberg, a 2006-2007 Research Assistant at GCI, and Meng Sun, a current GCI Research Assistant.

The collaboration between Professor Tingwei Zhang, the Asian and China Research Center at the Great Cities Institute and the Guangxi Planning Department opened up an opportunity to take part in this exciting competition organized by the China Architecture Academy, the China Urban Planning Academy and the Guangxi Construction Department.

The purpose of the competition was to bring in students’ unbounded ideas for three medium-sized towns in the Guangxi Province attempting to make the transition from an agricultural economy to a nationally and globally competitive city: Pingxiang, Dongxing and Wuming. Students were required to choose one of three cities and present creative ideas about urban structure, urban design of core areas, and architectural design of landmark buildings. The competition organizing committee received 128 design projects from over 50 colleges in 8 countries, including China, USA, Germany, France, UK, Canada and Malaysia.

The design concept of the UPP team for the city of Dongxing was the Hybrid City. This idea reflects the fact that the city of Dongxing presents a unique mixture of cultural and economic opportunities and challenges as a border city between China and Vietnam. Hence, it is well positioned to become the trade and cultural hub of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries. In this context, the project proposed hybrid land uses and design features -- adaptive uses that encompass the city’s economic growth potential and cultural tradition.

The student group would like to give special thanks to Professor Tingwei Zhang for the information and support provided and to the Urban Data Visualization Center for supporting the team in printing of the final panels.
