Faculty Scholar Detail, 2002-2003Janise HurtigResearch Specialist in the Humanities Center for Research on Women and Gender Parents Write Their Worlds: A Parent Involvement Program Bridging Urban Schools and Families - A Participatory Ethnographic Study Hurtig spent her time as a GCI Faculty Scholar incorporating a participatory research component into a parent writing and publishing program called "Parents Write Their Worlds", which she has been leading and studying at an elementary school in Little Village. The participatory research, conducted by a group of parent writers under Dr. Hurtig's supervision, focused on an ethnographic evaluation of the workshop. Researchers conducted community and parent surveys, interviews with teaching staff, participant-observation of events and activities related to the program, and kept field journals documenting and reflecting on the program’s impact and significance. Hurtig has written a book chapter and presented at professional conferences based on the findings, and plans to co-author an article with the parent researchers. She is currently working on the next phase of the project, which will bring teachers and parents together more directly to collaborate on curriculum development based on the writings. The Great Cities Institute Faculty Scholars Program brings UIC faculty to the Institute for a year in residence to begin, further, or complete an engaged research project. Scholars are free from their formal teaching responsibilities during their term. Prospective scholars apply by submitting a proposal that is peer reviewed along three key metrics of engaged research: interdisciplinarity, partnership, and impact. GCI Faculty Scholars implement and further their own research agendas, as well as develop grant proposals, participate in the Great Cities Institute Lecture Series, and contribute to the Great Cities Institute Working Paper Series. Applications are released in the fall semester and due at the start of the spring semester. |
