The Reproductive and Sexual Health of Latinas in Chicago: A Community Assessment

Professor Gutierrez addressed a gaping hole in the literature on the reproductive health status and circumstances of Latinas in Chicago. The goal was to assess the state of research, advocacy, and services in Chicago devoted to Latina reproductive health. The research involved: collecting and analyzing historical documentation of Latina organizing and involvement in reproductive health politics in Chicago, as well as a comprehensive resource review to exhaustively determine the status of the literature and resources (including both human resources and statistical information) available on the reproductive and sexual health and behavior of Latinas in Chicago. Research outcomes included the discovery of documents that demonstrate the involvement of Latinas organizing against sterilization abuse in Chicago.

The Great Cities Institute Faculty Scholars Program brings UIC faculty to the institute for a year in residence to begin, further, or complete an engaged research project. Scholars are free from their formal teaching responsibilities during their term. Prospective scholars apply by submitting a proposal that is peer reviewed along three key metrics of engaged research: interdisciplinarity, partnership, and impact.

GCI Faculty Scholars implement and further their own research agendas, as well as develop grant proposals, participate in the Great Cities Institute Lecture Series, and contribute to the Great Cities Institute Working Paper Series. Applications are released in the fall semester and due at the start of the spring semester.
