Engaged Research and the Urban Context:
Deconstructing the Concept and Developing its Potential

Dr. Trickett focused on two main sets of activities for the year, a literature-based writing project reviewing community interventions and the degree to which they represented engaged research, and the development of plans for a national conference on intervention theory. The literature review method involved a random sample of 250 intervention stories from the top journals in community psychology, prevention science, public health, and community health, and the development of a coding scheme that reflected principles of engaged research, such as community involvement in problem definition and intervention development. Over 200 of the papers have been coded thus far. With support from GCI Trickett also organized a conference on immigration. Building on a summer course co-taught with Drs. Barry Chiswick and Arlene Miller, the two-day conference was held on April 6 and 7, 2006, and brought together 60-70 UIC faculty and graduate students whose work includes a focus on immigration-related urban issues.

The Great Cities Institute Faculty Scholars Program brings UIC faculty to the institute for a year in residence to begin, further, or complete an engaged research project. Scholars are free from their formal teaching responsibilities during their term. Prospective scholars apply by submitting a proposal that is peer reviewed along three key metrics of engaged research: interdisciplinarity, partnership, and impact.

GCI Faculty Scholars implement and further their own research agendas, as well as develop grant proposals, participate in the Great Cities Institute Lecture Series, and contribute to the Great Cities Institute Working Paper Series. Applications are released in the fall semester and due at the start of the spring semester.
