John Hagedorn, a GCI Faculty Fellow, has focused his work on youth in armed conflict, and is currently doing a long term study of the history of gangs in Chicago. This work has also been moved to the global stage, with his participation in a ten nation comparative study of youth in organized armed violence, Neither War nor Peace. Hagedorn’s edited volume, Gangs in the Global City, was released by the University of Illinois Press in 2006.

Hagedorn founded and maintains http://gangresearch.net, a comprehensive website that presents gang research and is devoted to ‘research not stereotypes’. ‘Shattered Dreams’, a history of the 1960s Conservative Vice Lords, can be found on the site, as well as information on other Chicago gangs, the impacts of globalization on gangs, and policy and research regarding gangs.
