UIC-OCENHP is proud to announce and welcome Rev. Dr. Shirley Fleming as the
new director of the Office for Faith & Community Health Promotion. Shirley Fleming is a long-time advocate for equity and social justice in health and human services. She has dedicated more than thirty years of her public health career to working locally and nationally as a provider, administrator and advocate to assure that all people, especially those who are disadvantaged, have the opportunity to enjoy the highest level of health and engagement in human society.
The Center for Faith and Community Health Transformation is a joint project of Advocate Health Care www.advocatehealth.com and the University of Illinois, Office of Community Engagement and Neighborhood Health Partnerships www.uicni.org. It is a "virtual" center and, staff of the partner institutions work out of their own organizational sites, collaborating on projects and programs. The Center was formed to mobilize the unique strengths of faith communities to address the social conditions that impact people's health. Its core purpose is to catalyze community partnerships that draw on the wisdom and energy of faith communities to create the long-term social change that will eliminate health inequities. It also serves as a hub for the faith and health movement in metropolitan Chicago.
Rev. Dr. Fleming received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Xavier College, School of Nursing in 1972. She received her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois, College of Nursing in 1977 in MCH with a specialty in nurse-midwifery. She earned a Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Illinois, School of Public Health in 1994 with a special focus in community health and maternal-child health and a minor in health services. She accepted her call to ministry in 2002 and graduated in 2007 with a Masters of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary. She is a member in discernment with the Chicago Metropolitan Association (CMA) and has been approved for ordination within the United Church of Christ (UCC). She has been an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago
for the past 14 years.
Rev. Dr. Fleming has had the privilege of serving in leadership positions on numerous local and national academic, faith-based and governmental boards that are focused on understanding and eliminating health inequity across the lifecycle. She has a special passion and interest in community-driven strategies for improving maternal and child health. Dr. Fleming has been
married to her best friend, David, for nearly forty years. She is a lifelong resident of the south side of Chicago. God blessed their union with two wonderful children (Danyetta Gwendolyn and David). She is the proud Nana of Eden, Daniel, Jesus and David.

Community Leaders from Across the U.S. Call for Health Research Equity and Impact

We are pleased to share a summary from 2nd Annual National Community Partner Forum on Community-Engaged Health Disparities Research.
The Forums that took place December 5-7, 2012 in Washington DC. This second forum served to deepen a national network of community leaders and community-based organizations that engage in research to advance health equity and social justice. The resulting Community Network for Research Equity and Impact will focus on ensuring that communities have a significant voice in decisions about research practice and policy, are true partners in research, and fully benefit from the knowledge gained.
