ABOUT THE PHILLIP J. BOWMAN ANNUAL LECTURE The Phillip J. Bowman lecture has been established to honor Phillip J. Bowman’s contributions to UIC during his tenure as Director of IRRPP and Professor of African American Studies. During his time at the University, Dr. Bowman was an influential campus leader and a champion of administrative accountability with regard to faculty diversity, student achievement, and issues of access. He challenged the university to implement campus policy that fulfilled UIC’s mission as an urban public research university serving the City of Chicago. And it was under his leadership as Director of IRRPP that the Institutional Board of Higher Education approved the Institute as a formal campus unit. His visionary leadership and strategic instincts continue to guide the work of the Institute today. The annual lecture established in his name will feature national scholars of race, ethnicity, and public policy who provide timely analysis of issues of critical importance to the field and to communities of color.
