12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Title: "Understanding Racial Privilege"

Dr. Balcazar is Professor and Director of UIC's Center on Capacity Building for Minorities Disability Research in the Department of Disability and Human Development. This presentation examines racial privilege and discrimination through two projects: (1) a quantitative on-line survey that attempts to validate Peggy McIntosh’s observations of privilege as a white woman; and (2) a qualitative interview study of White, Black, Latino and Asian American residents of Chicago on city streets to understand their experiences and perspectives on white privilege and discrimination.

Dr. Balcazar is the second speaker in IRRPP's 2009-2010 Race, Ethnicity, and Policy Brown Bag Series, which features works-in-progress by IRRPP award recipients, and is held the second Thursday of every month. RSVP to irrpp@uic.edu.
