A Great Cities Institute Lecture:

The Visual Power of Urban Thinking: Changing Perceptions of Public Space, Chicago 1890-1915

Presenter: Burt Bledstein
Associate Professor, UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

In American history no idea has been more controversial, or had greater consequences for attitudes towards cities, than definitions of the public realm. This presentation in the form of a photostory explores how and why perceptions and meanings of the “public” were changing at the beginning of the twentieth century in the context of a modern, industrial, immigrant city like Chicago.

Burt Bledstein is an Associate Professor of History at UIC, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He is the Director of "In the Vicinity of Hull-House and the Maxwell Street Market, Chicago 1889-1935," Hull-House Museum.
