UIC Neighborhoods Initiative: University Community Partnerships

Since 1994, the UIC Neighborhoods Initiative (UICNI) has built partnerships between UIC and organizations in two adjoining communities, Pilsen and the Near West Side. The UICNI seeks to improve social, health, educational, and economic development in the communities by joining community groups, businesses and institutions from the neighborhoods and government agencies on collaborative projects. The lecture will provide an overview of UIC Neighborhood Initiative as well as highlight some its current projects and major accomplishments.

Dr. Cynthia Boyd began her health professional career in 1973 as a diploma prepared registered nurse. She completed her BSN, MSN and finally her Ph.D. in 1990 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Boyd has held a variety of advance practice and administrative roles including those of Critical Care Clinical Specialist, Assistant Director of Nursing and Executive Director of a community health center network. Currently, Dr. Boyd is the Director of the UIC Great Cities Neighborhood Initiative/Director Community Health Affairs for the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her responsibilities include developing, directing or monitoring University/community partnerships. She directs several community based initiatives including a school based clinic, community home care for families with special needs and an employment and training initiative for community residents to name a few. Dr. Boyd is the Assistant Dean for Community Initiatives for the UIC College of Nursing and resident faculty in the UIC International Center for Health Leadership Development.

Nacho Gonzalez has been providing technical assistance in organizational development and fundraising to community organizations since 1980. He also worked with the Working Group on Electoral Democracy as National Coordinator, a national organization dedicated to campaign finance reform. In 1991, he began to work at the international level by participating with the Continental Front of Community Organizations, an umbrella of community organizations in 22 countries of the Western Hemisphere. He serves on the Executive Commission representing the United States. He has a Masters in Urban Planning and Policy from the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at UIC and a Certificate in Business Administration from UIC.
