FACULTY POSITION AVAILABLE AS CO-DIRECTOR OF THE CITY DESIGN CENTER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO
The School of Architecture, College of Architecture and the Arts and the Urban Planning and Policy Program, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs seek applicants for a jointly appointed associate or full professor to serve as Co-director of the City Design Center of the College of Architecture and the Arts starting in the Fall of 2001. The City Design Center is a multi-disciplinary research, education, and service program which promotes the study and practice of design in the public interest.
The Co-director of the City Design Center will share responsibility for the management of the Center including the initiation and administration of projects and grants, supervision of staff, fund raising, and other activities to provide research and service for a diverse clientele outside the university. The successful candidate also will teach two urban planning courses: 1) a joint studio course offered by the Physical Planning Specialization for the Urban Planning and Policy Program and the Activist Practice Concentration for the School of Architecture Graduate Programs; and 2) a course offered in the Physical Planning Specialization for the Urban Planning and Policy Program.
The City Design Center currently has three staff, three faculty administrators, and over 15 faculty and ten research assistants actively working on projects. The School of Architecture offers a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies to over 470 undergraduate students and a Master of Architecture (one, two and three year programs) to approximately 130 graduate students. There are fifteen permanent and 32 adjunct faculty in the School of Architecture. The Urban Planning and Policy Program offers a Master of Urban Planning and Policy degree and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy Analysis. The unit includes 21 faculty and over 160 graduate students.
The successful candidate for the position of co-director of the City Design Center will possess knowledge and research interests in one or more of the following areas: community design, physical planning, and urban data visualization (a growing field within architecture and planning which combines knowledge of digital image-based and 3D representation, electronic databases, and GIS). A Ph. D. in urban planning, architecture, or a related field is required. Minorities and women are strongly encouraged to apply.
