CUPPA Commencement
This year's commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chicago Circle Center Illinois Room. More information will be sent to graduating students and faculty in February/March.
CUPPA Alumni Association Gives Alumni Appreciation Award
Greg Longhini, a 1979 alumnus of Urban Planning and Policy will be given the CUPPA Alumni Appreciation award on Friday, March 4. Longhini serves as an advisor to the chairman of the Chicago Transit Authority and director of the Office of the Secretary of the CTA. The alumni award recognizes dedication to the fields of urban planning and public administration along with contributions to the professional development of the college's students and alumni.
Faculty Awards
-- GCI Fellow Davis Jenkins has been appointed to Governor Rod Blagojevich's Task Force on Community Safety and Reentry. The group will give the governor recommendations for improving reintegration of former offenders into Illinois communities.
-- GCI Research Associate Tom Lyons won the National Commission on Correctional Health Re-entry Essay Contest. Lyon's essay featured work on evaluating the transitional clinic for HIV positive inmates at the Cook County Jail.
Urban Transportation Center and the Special Committee on Mass Transit
UTC and Public Administration are providing technical support to the Special Committee on Mass Transit for Northeastern Illinois. More information on the committee chaired by Representative Julie Hamos can be found at www.juliehamos.org/transit/
CUED and Immigrant-serving Organizations in Chicago
CUED, in collaboration with the Institute for Latino Studies at Notre Dame University, the Department of Black and Hispanic Studies at Baruch College, and the Center for the Study of Urban Poverty at UCLA, is launching a multiyear study sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation of the clientele, activities, and policy networks of immigrant-serving organizations in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
Voorhees on Chilean Public Housing
The Voorhees Center will begin collaboration with a team from the Instituto de Estudios Urbanos y Territoriales, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile on a three year investigation on "Ghettos and successful neighborhoods originated by Chilean public housing policies: The influence of residential segregation and policy implications."
Urban Change in China
As part of an ongoing effort led by Tingwei Zhang, the Dean, and others to strengthen CUPPAs links with China, a delegation from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Tongji in Shanghai visited CUPPA on January 17 to sign an international partnership agreement. The formal agreement makes faculty and student exchanges part of ongoing collaboration and facilitates joint research and other activities between the Tongji and CUPPA faculty. This is the first international agreeement signed by CUPPA with a university in another country and is the first formal step in the process of implementing the CUPPA 2010 Strategic Plan "CUPPA International" initiative.

Nina Savar, formerly of NIPC, has joined the staff of GCUDV as Visiting GIS Coordinator.
