Announcements:
Vonu Thakuriah Appointed
Professor Vonu Thakuriah has been appointed interim director of the Urban
Transportation Center commencing her duties on August 16, 2005. A national/international
search for a new permanent director for UTC will take place in the Fall.
Professor Tim Johnson, director of the Survey Research Laboratory, will
chair the search committee.
UPP and APA Mentors
The Urban Planning and Policy program and the Illinois Chapter of the
American Planning Association have partnered on a student mentoring program
beginning this Fall.
Mayor Daley to Speak
CUPPA's new student orientation on August 18 will feature Chicago Mayor
Richard M. Daley. Daley will address CUPPA students, faculty, and staff
at 5:00 p.m. at Student Center East (formerly known as CCC).
GCI Receives Funds
GCI received a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic
Opportunity to provide technical assistance around community technology
centers. The Field Foundation has also awarded a grant in support of GCI's
Latino Urban Leaders Project.
Mier Award Reaches
$27,447!
Through special fund-raising efforts, the Rob Mier Memorial Award Fund

Winter Forum Focusses
on the Healthy City
Save the date for GCI's 2005 Winter Forum on the topic of "The Healthy
City - People, Place, and Policy" to be held on December 2 at the
Student Center West (formerly known as CIU).
Johnson Looks at Social
Security
The National Academy of Sciences has appointed SRL Director and PA Professor
Tim Johnson to a new committee charged with reviewing the Social Security
Administration's Representative Payee system.
Alumni Speak Out
This summer over 25 CUPPA Alumni will speak to students in PA and UPP's
Field Experience and Professional Practice courses. This is an ongoing
program coordinated by the CUPPA Alumni Association to bring practical
alumni experience and advice into the classroom. Since the program's inception
in Spring 2003, nearly 150 public administration and urban planning alumni
have returned to campus to talk to students.
European Scholars
Study Race and Public Policy in IRRPP
Yasminah Beebeejaun and Adiam Tedros will visit IRRPP this fall. Beebeejaun,
a junior faculty member in the Faculty of the Built Environment, the University
of England, holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield, UK, and was
a post-doctoral research fellow at UIUC. Her research interests
are in ethnicity and its linkages with affordable housing. She will be
here August 1 through 26. Tedros is a PhD student at Goteborg University,
Sweden and is currently researching a PLUS project funded by the European
Union. Her research interests focuses on city planning and social
exclusion.

Hyeon-Shic Shin Receives
Award
PPA Student Hyeon-Shic Shin was awarded a second place prize in the Transport
Chicago Conference paper competition.
CUED and Rockefeller
Foundation
The Rockefeller Foundation is sponsoring a joint project between CUED
and the Institute for Labor and Employment at UC Berkeley, the Center
on Wisconsin Strategy at UW Madison, and the Brennan Center for Justice
at NYU, to examine the extent to which low-road employers push the costs
of low-paid work onto the public sector.
Comings and Goings:
T. Abraham Lentner,
MUPP '05, will join the City Design Center in July as visiting coordinator
for research programs.
Jennifer Rios will
be leaving her post as assistant to associate dean in the CUPPA Dean's
office as of July 11 taking a new position on campus as assistant to the
director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division
of the School of Public Health. (There will be a farewell party for Jennifer
in Rm. 110 of CUPPA Hall at 2PM on Friday, 7/8/05.)
Preyal Patel left
the finance division of the Dean's Office in mid-June to accept a new
position in the College of Medicine's Department of Pathology.
Diana (Yi) Dong will
be leaving the finance division of the Dean's Office in July for a new
post in the College of Pharmacy. More information forthcoming.
