In Memoriam

CUPPA friend, longtime philanthropist, and founder of the our Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement, Alan Voorhees died on December 18, 2005. Mr. Voorhees's many accomplishments included mapping enemy positions in the Pacific islands during World War II, devising a mathematical model for predicting traffic patterns, designing transportation and road systems in several national and international cities, connecting reclaimed land on Manhattan to a new street grid, becoming an early planner of the interstate highway system, donating acres of land to the Nature Conservancy among many other donations to public museums and universities, and leading an effort resulting in the largest freely accessible collection of historical maps on the Internet through the Library of Congress. Mr. Voorhees has been described as a hero and a legend. To read more about him and his remarkable life, see www.uic.edu/cuppa.

COMINGS AND GOINGS:

GCUDV Assistant Director Crystal Wilson, MUPP '02, has resigned her post in GCUDV effective January 15, 2006. Associate Dean Albert Schorsch commented on Crystal, "Since coming to CUPPA as a MUPP student in 2000, Crystal Wilson has been one of our pioneers in CUPPA's planning technology. She was the first CUPPA student to migrate her planning models to the virtual reality CAVE environment at UIC's Electronic Visualization Lab, and since her graduation in 2002, has worked in several capacities at GCUDV, preparing and teaching online seminars on planning/visualization support skills as well as CAVE for planners that have helped many CUPPA students advance their skills, especially in our physical planning concentration. We wish Crystal Wilson much success with her own growing planning firm, PlaceVision. We are grateful for her years of creative service at CUPPA, and thank her for her offer to serve as an advisor to CUPPA in the future."
