Alumni Group Presents
CUPPA Alumni Appreciation Award Chicago Federal Executive Board Chair
The CUPPA Alumni Association Board has selected Jack Hetrick,
current president of the Chicago Federal Executive Board, to
receive this year's CUPPA Alumni Appreciation Award. Mr. Hetrick was
nominated by Public Administration Professor Jim Thompson for the very
beneficial partnership the CFEB has had with CUPPA which includes several
PA certificate programs and CFEB scholarships to CUPPA students.
The CUPPA Alumni Appreciation Award recognizes dedication to
the fields of public
administration and urban planning and contributions to the development
of the college's students and alumni. Previous recipients include Steve
and Anita Friedman and Greg Longhini. This year's award reception will
take place on March 3, 6:00 p.m., at the home of Alumni Board Member
Audrey Wennick. The cost to attend the event is $50. For more information,

Boddy on UK Urban
Renaissance
Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) at the University of the
West Dean Martin Boddy will visit CUPPA and give a Dean's International
Lecture on "Urban Renaissance in the UK - is it happening?" on
Wednesday, March 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the GCI Conference Room.
Boddy's visit will include an opportunity to discuss opportunities
for collaborative research as well as an informal reception
after the
lecture.
Alumni Group Launches
2006 Spring Speakers Series
The CUPPA Alumni Association will host the following panel
discussions: March 9 - Managing Your Career: Moving in and
out of the Public Sector. Location: Illini Center, 200 South Wacker
Drive, Chicago. April 6 - Get a Grip on Your Neighborhood: Impacts
on Real Estate Development.
Location: National City Bank, 1 North Franklin, 3rd Floor,
Chicago. April 18 - Case Studies: Leveraging Community Involvement.
Location: Center for Neighborhood Technology, 2125 West North
Avenue, Chicago. Each program begins at 5:30 p.m. with registration
and networking reception including light appetizers and beverages followed
by the panel discussion from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. General Admission:
$10.00; U of I Alumni Association members: $5.00 (Join the
UI Alumni Association when registering for this event and pay just

Suketa Mehta, author of Maximum City - Bombay Lost and Found,
one of the most insightful books on the modern city, will
be speaking to CUPPA faculty, staff, and students at 3:00 p.m. RSVP

Daley
Forum April 4
The second annual Richard J. Daley Urban Forum will be held
on Tuesday, April 4, 2006, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in
Student Center East. This year’s topic is “Globalizing
Cities: Chicago and the World.” More information to come.
Voorhees
Center Launches New Website
The Nathalie P. Voorhees Center for Neighborhood and Community Improvement
recently posted its redesigned website at www.uic.edu/cuppa/voorhees.
The site contains several new data features
including IHARP, the first comprehensive database of
assisted units in the city of Chicago and state of Illinois.
Additional reports and Voorhees's gentrification index can also be
found on the new site.
Accolades to UTC
Staff and Students
Research Associate Professor P.S. Sriraj received the
Outstanding Paper Award for his paper, "An Environmental
Justice Approach to Evaluate the Equitable Distribution
of a Transit Capital Improvement Program" from
the Transportation Research Board. Sonali Tandon, MUPP,
was awarded the
Helene M. Overly Memorial Scholarship from the Women's
Transportation Seminar Greater Chicago Chapter. The
award is presented to exception young women pursuing careers in the
transportation industry. Dan Yu, Civil Engineering, is the 2005 recipient
of the Parker Award for the Outstanding Masters Research Paper in Science
and Technology. Her research included a prototype of a real time bus
performance visualization system for the Chicago Transit Authority
and a computer
based air quality assessment model for the Illinois
State Toll Highway Authority. Sadayuki Yagi (Syd),
Civil Engineering, won the Institute of Transportation Engineers -
Illinois Section 2005 Paper Award for his work on a joint SP/RP mode
choice model.
GCUDV Collaborates
with UIUC on Land Use Model
The Great Cities Urban Data Visualization Laboratory
will be collaborating with UIUC on an IDOT project
for a regional land use model in support of NIPC and CATS programs.
Pagano
Named to Boards
Public Administration Director and Professor Michael
Pagano has been named to the editorial board of State and Local Government
Review, joining fellow PA Professors Rebecca Hendrick
and Julia Melkers. Pagano has also been named to the advisory board
of the Budget and Tax Advisory Committee of Voices for Illinois Children.
Bringing
Home the Trophy - Basketball Triumph!
Dean Robin Hambleton and UPP PhD Student Greg Schrock
of CUED beat out five other UIC deans and student
partners in the Fifth Annual Challenge of the Deans Free-throw Competition
at the UIC Flames Basketball Game on Saturday, February 11, 2006. Robin
and Greg sank a total of 14
free-throws - more than any other college. Stop
by CUPPA Hall Room 110 to see the glowing gold
orb presented to the winners.

Sarah Rothschild
joins the Great Cities Institute as Program Coordinator for GCI professional
education.
David Scott, PhD
student from the University of Durham, UK, will be visiting CUED for
three months.
