| August 18, 2006 UIC Professor Named National Diversity Center Director Phillip Bowman, director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is taking a one-year leave from UIC to direct the new National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan. The center will
operate as a think tank, incubator, venture fund, clearinghouse and publisher,
according to a statement from UM. While on leave, Bowman will return
to UIC regularly to assist in the institute's transition and funding
efforts, said Robin Hambleton, dean of UIC's College of Urban Planning
and Public Administration, which "We are proud that Dr. Bowman has earned this opportunity. During his six years at UIC, he led the effort that gained permanent approval for the institute from the Illinois Board of Higher Education. He has served UIC through various committees and interdisciplinary approaches to research. He will no doubt achieve great success in the launch of the new diversity center. We wish him well," Hambleton said. Bowman is taking leave also as professor of urban planning and policy and professor of African American studies at UIC. He will begin a half-time appointment as professor of higher education and social policy at UM's Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education. Bowman recently received
an award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority
Issues, a division of the American Psychological Association. The Charles
and Shirley Thomas Award recognized Bowman's contributions to the education
and training of students of color and his professional presence within
ethnic UIC ranks among the
nation's top 50 universities in federal research funding and is Chicago's
largest university with 25,000 students, 12,000 faculty and staff,
15 colleges and the state's major public medical center. The UIC College
of Nursing ranks in the top 10 among the nation's nursing colleges,
