UIC Professor Named National Diversity Center Director

Phillip Bowman, director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, is taking a one-year leave from UIC to direct the new National Center for Institutional Diversity at the University of Michigan.

The center will operate as a think tank, incubator, venture fund, clearinghouse and publisher, according to a statement from UM. While on leave, Bowman will return to UIC regularly to assist in the institute's transition and funding efforts, said Robin Hambleton, dean of UIC's College of Urban Planning and Public Administration, which
houses the institute. Angela Ebreo, assistant to the director for research at the institute, will serve as its visiting associate director pending board approval.

"We are proud that Dr. Bowman has earned this opportunity. During his six years at UIC, he led the effort that gained permanent approval for the institute from the Illinois Board of Higher Education. He has served UIC through various committees and interdisciplinary approaches to research. He will no doubt achieve great success in the launch of the new diversity center. We wish him well," Hambleton said.

Bowman is taking leave also as professor of urban planning and policy and professor of African American studies at UIC. He will begin a half-time appointment as professor of higher education and social policy at UM's Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education.

Bowman recently received an award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues, a division of the American Psychological Association. The Charles and Shirley Thomas Award recognized Bowman's contributions to the education and training of students of color and his professional presence within ethnic
communities.
