The Inaugural UIC George Krambles Scholarship Fund CTA Charter
Train Outing
Saturday September 30, 2006
George Krambles Legacy
The scholarship fund is named after the former Executive Director of the Chicago
Transit Authority, George Krambles. He served the region's transit system for
43 years starting with the Chicago Rapid Transit Company in 1937. George graduated
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1936 and has been a friend
and supporter of UIC's Urban Transportation Center. He was inducted into the
American Public Transit Association's Hall of Fame and is one of the most noted
public transit officials of all time in the United States.
George Krambles Scholarship Fund
The fund was established by George to provide financial assistance to students
embarking on careers in transportation, urban transit, urban planning, engineering
and related fields. In 2005, the Krambles fund endowed the UIC George Krambles
Transportation Scholarship exclusively for CUPPA transportation students. The
mission of the fund is to encourage young people to embark upon a professional
career in public transportation and related fields by providing financial assistance
to full-time undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at UIC in transportation
related degree programs in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.
Each fall, two students are awarded scholarships based upon the quality of their
scholarship application and accompanying paper submission. The 2006 student scholarship
award winners will be announced during this year's fund raising event.
Fund Raising Event Description
This year's event is the inaugural fund raising event. It is the intent of the
scholarship fund's directors to annually hold an event each fall to raise monies
that will go toward the endowment of the scholarship fund. The inaugural event,
scheduled for Saturday, September 30, is a special opportunity to tour Chicago's
rapid transit system that George was so instrumental in shaping. The narrated
tour will cover portions of CTA's Green, Pink, Blue, Brown, Red and Yellow lines
and will highlight points of interest related to urban planning, architecture
and transit history. Equipment permitting, we expect two special trains to be
used. One train will have an example of every type of railcar currently running
in CTA revenue service. The other train, to be operated on the "Skokie Swift",
is expected to use CTA's historic (circa 1924) 4000 series "L" cars.
Attendees will have numerous photo opportunities along the way as the trains
travel in and around the Loop and the Chicagoland area.
Early bird registration and payment of $50.00 per person must be received by
September 15th. After September 15th tickets are $60.00 per person.
Note: Space is limited so be sure to confirm your participation and secure your
ticket for this historic event before September 15th.
Special thanks to this year's event sponsors:

-- Continental Airport Express
