CUPPA Briefing
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Great Cities Institute partners with The HistoryMakers
The Great Cities Institute (GCI) is a part of new partnership between
the University of Illinois and The HistoryMakers, the organization
founded by Vernon D. Jarrett Fellow Julieanna Richardson. U of I,
UIC, and U of
I Springfield are working with HistoryMakers to assist with archiving
its 1,200 oral history interviews, analyze the interviews, and produce
a series of public forums and events that involve HistoryMakers interview
subjects. GCI will be working with other units on the UIC campus
to produce the forums at UIC. President White has committed nearly
$600,000 over three years
to support the project on the three campuses.
Mossberger appointed program chair of MPSA
Karen Mossberger has been appointed as Program Chair, Public Policy,
Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) for 2008. The Midwest Political
Science Association, founded in 1939, is a national organization of more
than 3,000 political science professors, researchers, students, and public
administrators from over 80 countries, and is dedicated to the advancement of
scholarly communication in all areas of political science.
Student achievements
MUPP student and research assistant to the CUPPA dean Glenda Garelli
was one of the campus winners for the Provost's Award for Graduate Research
for the Spring 2007 semester. Ms. Garelli will use the award to travel
to Milan to complete research for a comparative study of Milan and Chicago's
cultural redevelopment strategies. Her final paper will be presented
at the European Planners Conference in Naples in July 2007. Our congratulations
on receiving this distinguished award!
MPA students Jacob Hoots and Rachel Johnson have been chosen as Finalists
for the Presidential Management Fellows Program's Class of 2007 and are expected
to be appointed as Fellows effective FY08.
Our congratulations to MUPP student Emily Tapia who placed first in the
Humanities and Social Sciences category of the UIC Graduate and Professional
Student Research Forum 2007. In her project, "Green Candy: Creating
a New Campus for a Vacant Candy Company in Garfield Park," Ms. Tapia
explored a series of uses for the vacant Brach's Candy Company building
in Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood that might build and strengthen
the community's development and enhance the overall environmental quality
of the area.
MUPP student Katherine Tully has received the 2006 CREW Chicago Scholarship.
Commercial Real Estate Executive Women (CREW) of Chicago is part of the
CREW Network, a federation of 59 local chapters across the US and Canada,
representing 6,500 professionals in every discipline of Commercial Real Estate.
Ms. Tully will formally receive her award at a breakfast on May
2.
MPA student Andy Chupick will be named Best Student for 2007 at ASPA-Chicago's
Annual Awards ceremony, hosted by Public Administration on Friday, May
4 in UIC's Student Center East. Mr. Chupick will also be recognized at
CUPPA Commencement on Saturday, May 12.
MPA students Matthew Smith and Evelyn Yang will be awarded Public Service
Scholarships by the Chicago Federal Executive Board at its Federal Employee of
the Year celebration on Thursday, May 17.
Mastracci bridges the gap
Sharon Mastracci, assistant professor in Public Administration, will
be working on a Joyce Foundation grant to the Shriver Center on Poverty
Law and the Center for Economic and Policy Research for a project, "Bridging
the Gaps: Structuring Benefits to Promote Mobility for Low Wage Workers."
CUPPA Daily Clips
The CUPPA Daily Clips are news stories on the activities or contributions
of CUPPA faculty, staff and students, obtained on a daily basis from
the UIC Office of Public Affairs News Bureau. As of Friday, April 13,
the CUPPA Dean's Office has begun emailing CUPPA Daily Clips summaries
to colleagues
and students weekly, on Fridays. These summaries are also available at: http://www.uic.edu/cuppa/clippings.htm.

Recent presentations
Michael Pagano, director of Public Administration, is in South Africa
from April 18-23 at the Forum of Federations international conference
on Local Government and Metropolitan Regions. Pagano will also be speaking
to the Gauteng provincial government (Johannesburg) on governance in
the Chicago metropolitan area.
Public Administration associate professor Jim Thompson participated in
a Thought Leaders Forum in Washington on April 10. The Forum was sponsored
by the Office of Personnel Management and aimed to provide advice to
the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security and NASA on how to manage
the
members of their Senior Executive Service.
Janet Smith, co-director of the Voorhees Center, co-facilitated a workshop
at the Community-Campus Partnership in Health conference in Toronto,
April 13, in partnership with Joy Hammel and Andrea Gossett, UIC Disability Studies,
and Darrell Price and Adele Barksdale, Access Living. The workshop
presented findings from a pilot study that used a peer evaluator model
to learn more about community and housing access needs and strategies
among people with physical, cognitive and sensory disabilities in Chicago.
The findings will be used to apply for an NIH grant and to affect policy regarding
housing options for people in Illinois.

Helen Mitchell, Program
and Policy Analyst, Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy
Helen Mitchell, Program and Policy Analyst in IRRPP since 2002 and an
MPA alumna, resigned effective 3/16/07 to take the position of Legislative
Director for Congressman Danny K. Davis of the 7th Congressional District. CUPPA
thanks Ms. Mitchell for the past five years of service, and wishes
her
much success in her new position!
Gabrielle Brown, Program Coordinator, Public Administration
Gabrielle Brown will return as a full-time Program Coordinator in Public
Administration in May, 2007. Ms. Brown is currently working a reduced schedule
as she completes her master's degree in the College of Education.
Sharon Sanders, Clerical Assistant, Public Administration
Sharon Sanders has joined the Public Administration program as a clerical assistant,
and has taken charge of the PA front desk.
Nichole Hinkley, Office Assistant, Public Administration
Nichole Hinkley, former office assistant in PA, has accepted a position
in LAS Administration as a Program Coordinator.
