ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Resignations
Phillip Bowman, Director, Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy
Phillip Bowman, Director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy and Professor in Urban Planning and Policy has tendered his resignation effective 8/15/07 or earlier. Dr. Bowman has accepted the position of Director at the University of Michigan’s National Center for Institutional Diversity.
Saurav Bhatta, Assistant Professor, Urban Planning and Policy
Saurav Dev Bhatta has tendered his resignation as Assistant Professor of Urban Planning and Policy (UPP) effective 8/15/07. Professor Bhatta will be accepting a 0% appointment in UPP to participate in future CUPPA online education initiatives, and a 0% Research Assistant Professor appointment in the Urban Transportation Center (UTC) to participate from time to time in the Center’s research, with both appointments to be effective on 8/16/07, subject to Board of Trustee’s approval.
Brent D. Ryan, Assistant Professor, Urban Planning and Policy
Brent D. Ryan has tendered his resignation effective 8/15/07 as Assistant Professor of Urban Planning and Policy and as Co-Director of the City Design Center, and will be thereafter taking the position of Assistant Professor of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University.
Kris Hertenstein, Administrative Assistant, Survey Research Lab - Urbana
Kris Hertenstein will be retiring from the University of Illinois and leaving her position with SRL Urbana on June 28.
New appointments
Yingling Fan, Visiting Assistant Professor, Urban Planning and Policy
Yingling Fan, who is currently completing her PhD degree in City and Regional Planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will join the CUPPA faculty in August 2007 as Visiting Assistant Professor in Urban Planning and Policy, subject to Board of Trustee’s approval. Yingling, who obtained her first degree in Transportation Engineering from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, specializes in transportation and land use and will hold a Visiting Research Assistant Professorship in UTC. We look forward to welcoming her to CUPPA.
Mary K. Feeney, Assistant Professor, Public Administration
Mary K. Feeney has accepted the Public Administration program’s offer to join the faculty in Fall 2007, subject to Board of Trustee’s approval. Ms. Feeney is currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Public Administration and Policy at the University of Georgia. She holds a BS in political science from the University of Wyoming and a Masters in Public Policy from the Bloustein School of Urban Planning and Public Policy - Rutgers University. Her research interests include public and nonprofit management, mentoring, science and technology policy, and survey research, and her teaching interests include public management, nonprofit management, survey research, qualitative methods, and public policy theory.
Brenda Parker, Instructor, Urban Planning and Policy
Brenda Parker will join the Urban Planning and Policy program faculty in Spring 2008, subject to Board of Trustee’s approval. Ms. Parker is currently completing her doctorate in Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; she holds a BA in American Political Affairs and Social Relations from Michigan State University and an MS in Geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a concentration in urban geography. Upon completion of her dissertation, she will be named Assistant Professor, UPP.
David F. Merriman, Professor, Public Administration and Professor, IGPA
David F. Merriman will join the Public Administration program as Professor at 50% time, and will hold a 50% appointment as Professor in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) beginning Fall, 2007, subject to Board of Trustee approval. Prof. Merriman earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in Economics, and previously studied at American University. The National Tax Association, Tax Institute of America gave him First Prize for the outstanding doctoral dissertation in government spending and taxation in 1983. Since 1987, he had served on the faculty of Loyola University, most recently as Professor of Economics where he was named “Researcher of the Year” in 2002-2003, and earlier held faculty positions at Northern Illinois University and at the University of Texas at Dallas. Prof. Merriman brings a wealth of knowledge in public finance as an applied economist with expertise and a national reputation in the areas of state and local public finance, urban and regional public finance, and Medicaid research. He is an expert in Cook County residential property values and property tax assessments, and as such is a visible figure with county government. Prof. Merriman has become a “go-to person” in the public finance area for all of the Chicago metropolitan area, including the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) and the area media, with a proven track record in the area of public engagement/public service with and within the State of Illinois. He also co-authored an important 1999 report on the Economic Impact of Higher Education in Illinois under a $120,000 Illinois Department of Education grant. Prof. Merriman has established a well-respected relationship with various national organizations, agencies, and foundations, including the Urban Institute, the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the World Bank. Since 1996, he has served as Adjunct Professor at IGPA.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Raffaella Nanetti appointed to Naples policy development task force
UPP professor Raffaella Nanetti has been appointed to the Task Force created by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi to develop a new policy initiative for the City of Naples. The policy focuses on poor families with children in elementary and secondary schools who are at risk of dropping out and entering a cycle of poverty, thus becoming recruits for criminal organizations.
PA adjunct lecturer selected as United States Magistrate Judge
Susan E. Cox, an adjunct lecturer in PA, has been selected by the District Judges of the Northern District of Illinois to be a United States Magistrate Judge. Ms. Cox is currently President and owner of the Law Offices of Susan E. Cox, Ltd., where she practices both civil and criminal law.
Rachel Dziallo receives Critical Language Scholarship
MUPP student Rachel Dziallo has been selected as a recipient of a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship for participation in the Arabic program in Cairo, Egypt from June 17 to August 15, 2007.
Phil Ashton receives 2007 UPPSA Award for Excellence in Teaching
The UPPSA Award for Excellence in Teaching was established to provide a way for UPP students to honor and reward outstanding contributions by a UPP faculty member, and is to be presented annually to recognize excellence in teaching, mentoring, and service to UPP students. This year, the award was presented to Professor Philip Ashton along with a $100 TCF VISA Gift Card.
Dean visits Tongji University, Shanghai
Robin Hambleton and Tingwei Zhang participated in the Centenary Celebrations for Tongji University held on 18-20 May. Robin gave a lecture on the future agenda for global urban research, and meetings were held with senior colleagues in both the College of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Department of Management Science. Professors from CUPPA (in both UPP and PA) will be invited to visit Tongji in 2007/08 as part of plans to expand cross-national research and policy analysis on China and the US.
Marty Jaffe builds links in Europe
Funded by University College Dublin (UCB), Director of UPP Marty Jaffe visited the School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy at UCB on June 4 to give an international lecture and build links. As a part of this link building, which also involves UIC’s Institute for Environmental Science and Policy (IESP), one of UCB’s lecturers Simon McDonnel will serve as an adjunct professor for UPP in 2007-08. Marty also gave an international lecture in the Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of the West of England (UWE) on June 6. CUPPA faculty are invited to visit UWE during 2007/08.
