Daley Forum April 29
The 2008 Richard J. Daley Forum on April 29 at UIC will feature mayors from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Lithuania, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, the United States and other countries. This international forum of municipal leaders will weigh the social and economic effects of this mass urbanization, and also consider the creative human potential it can unlock. The forum will be held from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on April 29 in the new UIC Forum at Halsted and Roosevelt. Parking is available one block west in Lot 5, 1135 S. Morgan St. UIC faculty, students and staff receive complimentary admission but registration is required; to register or for more information, please visit www.rjdurbanforum.uic.edu.
UPP Hires Two New Faculty
Joshua Drucker and Sanjeev Vidyarthi will join the UPP faculty in fall 2008 subject to BOT approval. Drucker specializes in urban economic development. Vidyarthi specializes in physical and land use planning. (See MayBriefing for bio details.)
IMPORTANT! Proposed College Bylaw Changes
All CUPPA faculty and staff are encouraged to read the proposed CUPPA bylaw changes (attached). CUPPA Faculty will vote on the proposed changes at the college-wide faculty meeting on Friday, May 2, 2-4:00 p.m., CUPPAH 110. Faculty will also vote on the proposal to add to the list of academic and research units in Article One of the college by-laws: “Urban and Public Affairs program.” Please share comments with voting faculty prior to the meeting.

Sean Kennelly, Assistant Director of Public Administration, was one of twelve recipients of UIC's INSPIRE Award at a ceremony on April 2, 2008. The award was given to Sean for demonstrating Integrity, Nurture, Service, Pride, Intellect, Respect, Excellence in the conduct of his duties.

At the invitation of the Ayuntamiento de Madrid (city government) and the Autonomous University of Madrid, iDean Michael Pagano presented three seminars to the senior executives of Madrid's government convened by the Department of Finance and Public Administration: 1. Local Governments in the US: A Patchwork Quilt (Gobiernos Locales en los EEUU: Una Tela de Remiendos) on April 1; 2. Local Government Finances in the US (Financiación Local en los EEUU) on April 2; and 3. Service Delivery in the US and Chicago (Gestión de servicios públicos: el caso de Chicago) on April 3.
Mossberger Studies Youth Digital Media
Public Administration Associate Professor Karen Mossberger participated in a conference at Northwestern University on the Youth Digital Media Study funded by a MacArthur Foundation planning grant to create a longitudinal survey of digital media use by young people.
Merriman and TIFs
Public Administration Professor David Merriman co-organized a conference entitled "Tax Increment Financing: New Evidence and Ideas for Reform" held at the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy on March 21, 2008. The conference brought together experts on TIF from around the country to discuss the latest research. Professor Merriman will be presenting some of his research on tobacco tax avoidance in Warsaw, Poland in April at the “Summit of tobacco control leaders from Central and Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union Countries."
Perry On Change
David Perry, Director of the Great Cities Institute, delivered the inaugural Chancellor’s Seminar Lecture on March 4 at the Washington State University, Vancouver. The title of his talk was “Anchoring Urban Change: Universities, their Cities and Land.” Perry also delivered a talk as part of the Arizona State University meeting on “From Enclave to Institution: The Changing Role of the University in the City,” in late February.
Makarewicz, MUPP ’01, awarded UIAA Lou Liay Spirit Award for Extraordinary Alumni Service
Carrie Makarewicz, MUPP ’01, Past President CUPPA Alumni Association, has been awarded the University of Illinois Alumni Association's Lou Liay Spirit Award for Extraordinary Alumni Service. The award is bestowed upon one alum per year of the University of Illinois at Chicago who has consistently demonstrated extraordinary loyalty, commitment, dedication and service to the UI Alumni Association for the betterment of the University of Illinois, and whose name and achievements have become synonymous with their Alma Mater. Makarewicz is currently a doctoral student in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California Berkeley and a Dwight D. Eisenhower Graduate Fellow. She previously served as president of the CUPPA Alumni Association where she saw membership of the group’s board of directors more than triple since its founding in 1997. As president she also spearheaded several new board initiatives including a distinctive Life-long learning professional education series and class speakers series.
CUED Analyzes Green
CUED is conducting an analysis of economic development opportunities and workforce development needs associated with the City of Chicago’s Climate Change Action Plan. CUED’s activities include identifying career pathways in “green jobs,” assessing Chicago’s capacity to train workers for green jobs, and analyzing the business development potential of the initiative. This project is being conducted on behalf of the City of Chicago.
Voorhees Looks at Rental Market In South Chicago
Claritian Associates, Inc. is working with CUPPA's Voorhees Center to examine conditions in the rental housing market, the profile of renting households and the demand/supply mismatch and trends in South Chicago. The study begins in May/June and is expected to be completed in the summer.
