Carrie Makarewicz, MUPP ’01, Past President CUPPA Alumni Association, has been awarded the University of Illinois Alumni Association's Lou Liay Spirit Award for Extraordinary Alumni Service.

The award is bestowed upon one alum per year of the University of Illinois at Chicago who has consistently demonstrated extraordinary loyalty, commitment, dedication and service to the UI Alumni Association for the betterment of the University of Illinois, and whose name and achievements have become synonymous with their Alma Mater.

Makarewicz is currently a doctoral student in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California Berkeley and a Dwight D. Eisenhower Graduate Fellow. She previously served as president of the CUPPA Alumni Association where she saw membership of the group’s board of directors more than triple since its founding in 1997. As president she also spearheaded several new board initiatives including a distinctive Life-long learning professional education series and class speakers series.

Carrie’s current research focuses on planning equitable and sustainable regions by coordinating the planning for transportation, schools, employment and housing development. Prior to returning to school, she was research manager at the Chicago-based nonprofit Center for Neighborhood Technology. She has co-authored several reports and studies on housing and transportation, including the Reconnecting America series on the airline and passenger rail industries; the Surface Transportation Policy Project’s “Driven to Spend”; reports on the combined costs of housing and transportation for the Brookings Institution and the Center for Housing Policy, and a number of studies on Transit-Oriented Development.

She has a master’s in Urban Planning and Policy from UIC and a bachelor’s in business from the University of Michigan.

Carrie will be recognized at this year's CUPPA Commencement on Friday, May 9.
