Transportation Expert Named Head of Urban Planning Department

An expert on urban transportation has been named head of the Department of Urban Planning and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Kazuya Kawamura, UIC associate professor of urban planning and policy, has written more than 50 papers, articles and reports on transportation issues, including freight, transportation-land use interactions, economic impacts of transportation, accessibility measures and congestion pricing.

Kawamura joined the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs in 1999. As a researcher in its Urban Transportation Center, he has studied freight operations and policies extensively. He has managed projects funded by more than $1 million in external grants.

Kawamura serves on the urban freight and economic development committees of the National Academies' Transportation Research Board.
