PA 494: Special Topics in PA - Project Management
(Thursdays 6-9pm with Mr. Jeffrey Gawel)
This course can be taken towards credit for Public Management or Information Technology concentration requirements. Students planning to take the Capstone course in Fall 2008 may want to consider taking this course in Spring 2008.

Course Description
Project management skills are becoming increasing necessary in the today's public sector environment, where public administrators are required to deliver upon time-sensitive, critical projects while also attempting to keep the scope and costs in check. Unfortunately, studies have shown that a large percentage of projects across various industries often fail, in large part due to the lack of strong project management skills. This course will discuss the theory and principles behind project management, and will focus upon the following topics: the lifecycle and phases of project management; the project management team and organization; planning strategies and the ability to develop Work Breakdown Structures and project plans; risk management; scheduling and cost estimation techniques; scope and change management; conflict resolution and negotiation strategies; and other related items. Project management best practices will be reviewed and discussed, as well as case studies. Various project management tools will also be covered during the course, including Microsoft Project.
