Curriculum Vitae

Professor Rebecca Hendrick's current work merges the four areas of financial management, organizational theory, public finance, and governance focusing on local governments and governments in a regional context. She is drafting a book entitled Managing the Fiscal Metropolis. This book will assess how suburban municipalities in the Chicago metropolitan area manage their finances within the fragmented and decentralized system of governance that exists in this region. Her primary focus is to identify the major problems faced by municipalities, the solutions they adopt, and the outcomes of their efforts.

Professor Hendrick has been working on three research articles that employ financial and interview data from municipal governments in the Chicago metropolitan region. One article, "Assessing and Measuring the Fiscal Health of Local Governments" published in Urban Affairs Review looks at tax and revenue competition among municipal governments. The second article recently published in Public Budgeting and Finance (2006) deals with "organizational slack" and the effects this phenomenon has on municipal financial conditions. The third article examines the impact of professionalization of financial management and governance on municipal fiscal practices and financial conditions.
