Public Administration

International student applicants should send their completed Graduate College Application, $60 application fee, official transcripts, financial statement, and TOEFL scores directly to the UIC Office of Admissions and Records (OAR).

International applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum TOEFL scores accepted for admission to the Graduate College for the TOEFL iBT includes minima for the four subsections, as well as the total score. The required scores are: Reading 19, Speaking 20, Listening 17, Writing 21, and Total 80. The address for OAR is:

Materials to be sent directly to the PA Program Office in one package:
    1. Three letters of recommendation (sealed and signed) from former professors or supervisors
    2. One or two-page personal statement. Please identify a concentration in your statement. If necessary, you may change your concentration at a later time. Use the following as an outline for your personal statement:
    • What is your background and academic interests?
    • Why did you decide to study public administration at the graduate level?
    • What are your professional goals?
    • How does an MPA degree fit into your short and long-term plans for your professional career?
    3. Resume
    4. A sample of your written work no more than 8-10 pages double-spaced in length. Academic writing samples preferred.
    5. GRE scores (required for MPA applicants requesting program administered financial assistance; optional for MPA applicants who are not requesting aid)
    6. Request for Graduate Appointment Form (if you wish to be considered for a research assistantship)

    • What is your background and academic interests?
    • Why did you decided to study public administration at the graduate level?
    • What are your professional goals?
    • How does a Ph.D. in Public Administration fit into your short- and long-term plans for your professional career?
    3. Resume
    4. A 3-5 page essay on a contemporary issue in public administration, with suggestions on how the issue may be resolved
    5. Recent test scores (less than five years old) from the Graduate Record Examination (general test only)
    6. Application for Graduate Appointment Form (if you wish to be considered for a research assistantship)
