Day Care Recommendations for Community Enterprises, Inc.*

Project Number: 184
Report Date: June 1983
Author(s): Wim Wiewel

Based on an analysis of population statistics and day care services in 62 Cook County communities the CEI board at its April meeting selected 6 areas for detailed study. The Center for Urban Economic Development was asked to coordinate the efforts of CEI staff and volunteers. Since then, the CEI Day care Advisory Committee has met twice and added and deleted some areas. Members of the committee and others have collected data on the various areas, including census data, school enrollment information, real estate and economic information, review of the availability of day care and other services, and general community background information. In some cases site inspections were made. The Center for Urban Economic Development developed initial recommendations which were reviewed with the Advisory Committee and the CEI Executive Director.

Based on the research completed since the April board meeting we recommend that the board commission the development of a business plan for a day care center in western Hoffman Estates, serving primarily residential sections of Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg and secondarily parts of Hanover Park and Streamwood. We also recommend that the board simultaneously commission an analysis of the feasibility of a day care center in eastern Elk Grove to serve mainly the employees in the Elk Grove industrial area, and secondarily the remainder of Elk Grove Village. Finally, we recommend that the CEI executive director continue to explore the potential of an employer-based day care center in Northbrook.
