Feasibility Analysis for a Micro-computer Repair Training Program

Project Number: 190
Report Date: September 1983
Author(s): Carlos Pena

At the request of The Neighborhood Institute (TNI), the University of Illinois Center for Urban Economic Development (CUED) investigated the feasibility of a training program for micro-computer repair. The purpose of the program would be to provide residents of Chicago's South Shore community, especially those with low-moderate income and limited educational background, with a marketable job skill. The program would complement TNI's community development activities and its educational programs.

CUED performed the following activities:

Interviewed representatives of firms engaged in the manufacture, repair, and selling of micro-computers
Reviewed background information and literature on the industry
Reviewed information on similar training programs offered elsewhere

The key findings of the research were as follows:

Sales of micro-computers have grown very rapidly and are expected to continue at a very high rate for some time
There is an increasing need for trained personnel to repair these machines
A training program of approximately six months, followed by an internship will be required

The body of the report provides more detailed analysis of the nature of the demand for repair personnel, the likely sources of placements, the skills required, the structure of the curriculum, and the entrance requirements for students. The report concludes that a training program is feasible but needs to aim at a slightly better educated group of people then TNI had first envisioned.
