Analysis of Food Store Potential - South Austin Community

Project Number: 141
Report Date: August 1980
Author(s): Wim Wiewel, John Betancur

The South Austin Community of Chicago is currently inadequately served by retail food stores. While the area contains a substantial number of small corner groceries, there exists a need and a potential for a medium-sized supermarket.

Two sites are available. One is a currently vacant roller-rink which used to be a 15,000 square foot Jewel grocery store with a 15,000 square foot parking lot. The other site offers 30,000 square feet of vacant land. Either site is centrally located in a moderate-income black community of approximately 12,000 households.

A newly-designed, well-managed store could count on the support of the area's residents and institutions. We estimate such a store would be able to achieve sales of up to $4,500,000 per year or more, depending upon name recognition and advertising.
